I'd really would like to talk to the person that made the DVD decision and find out the reasons for going that route.Sky & Telescope has been bringing the sky and skygazers together since 1941. I would've still paid the $249 for the convenience and flexibility and S&T would have gotten better protection for its IP, presumably a better return by eliminating the cost of the DVD set, and higher visibility and sales that the Kindle store would provide. The physical DVDs will be relegated to the back of the closet ASAP.įor me a better situation would have been for S&T to have put the collection in the Kindle store, where I could have displayed the content on my Kindle, iPad, and PC. Moultrie, Under-Secretary for Defense Intelligence and Security, told the committee, "(W)e want to know what's out there just like you want to know what's out there." They're mostly concerned the source might be earthly adversaries, not non-terrestrial ones. Those officials who testified this week said they hoped to remove any stigma about reporting Unexplained Aerial Phenomena. Those things may not be from another planet, but we would rest easier if we knew what they were." They called right back, and didn't say No, or Yes, but said, on background, "We receive scores of reports every year that can't be explained. National Security The military's UFO database now has info from about 400 reported incidents aviators, and no attempt had been made to communicate with them," although if any UAPs would like to appear on our show, I promise them Nina Totin' Bags from the NPR gift shop, for carting back earthly souvenirs. To quote an understated line from NPR.org, "None of the documented objects had attempted to communicate with U.S. Navy intelligence, told the committee they still haven't discovered anything "nonterrestrial in origin." Investigators say there are now about 400 reported "incidents" in their database, in which people reported seeing something in the skies that cannot be explained.īut Scott W. This week a congressional committee held the first hearings on UFOs - now called UAPs, or Unexplained Aerial Phenomena - since 1969. Deputy Director of Naval Intelligence Scott Bray explains a video of an unidentified aerial phenomena, as he testifies before a House Intelligence Committee subcommittee hearing at the U.S. They stressed that classification in of itself isn't evidence of a cover-up, but rather it is an example of the intelligence community doing everything it can to keep its sources and methods protected.U.S. But both the officials and some lawmakers themselves conceded that if some or all of the UAPs turn out to be technology fielded by a US adversary, then some of the answers will likely remain classified. Lawmakers repeatedly pressed the Pentagon to be as open as possible with the American people on what they find out. But as Carson pointed out, the office still does not have a named director. The office, the Airborne Object Identification and Management Synchronization Group (AOIMSG), is supposed to be fully operational by next month. The officials called to testify were on Capitol Hill in part to discuss their progress standing up a special office that lawmakers mandated the Pentagon create to serve essentially as a clearinghouse for defense and intelligence community reports on UAPs. And then if there is, it is not beyond the realm of possibility that there is some exploration coming here." "It would be pretty presumptuous to have a hard and fast conclusion. "No one knows whether there is extra-terrestrial life. Peter Welch, a Vermont Democrat, went further than any of his colleagues in suggesting that aliens could exist and that they would likely want to visit Earth. I don’t think the colorism issue (a legitimate argument, I may add) hurt the film’s box office I do think its simultaneous appearance on HBO Max gave people an alternate, cheaper avenue to see it. Is it just me, or was Miranda everywhere this year? There was the superb Encanto, the very bad Vivo, his directorial debut Tick, Tick… Boom!-and hell, he even turned up as an interview subject in Summer of Soul! But the most fun I had with him was his cameo on the streets of Washington Heights. I saw the musical on Broadway, so I was familiar with Lin-Manuel Miranda’s pre- Hamilton triumph. We had a good crowd, despite it being the early days of vaxxing and chillaxing. What say you about your experiences on the nonfiction side of the fence?īilge and I had In the Heights on our Top 10 lists, a movie that marked my first post-March 2020 IMAX screening. I reviewed quite a few of them, and outside of the absolutely dismal Mayor Pete and the Spago ad that was Wolfgang, my assignments fell on the positive side of the scale for me. Alison, you mentioned that you did not think this was a good year for docs. Add to this musical numbers that have entered into the cultural lexicon, and you have a near flawless film.I have three documentaries in my Top 10 list-you can see all my picks at the bottom of this entry-so I’d like to ask Alison to expand on something she said during our preliminary discussions. Whatever your feelings about singing, prancing gang members, it would be impossible to ignore the artistry of the film on display. It's a great piece of direction and artistry, undeniable artistry. I'm sure the film version has technical advantages over the stage version, and the "first meeting" scene is a perfect example of this. So Maria (Natalie Wood) and Tony (Richard Beymer) find themselves falling in love at first sight when they meet at a dance, oblivious to the world around them. hispanic, the barriers separating the two factions are distinct and seemingly uncrossable. The premise of the film (and I assume of the stage version) is simple: what if Romeo and Juliet took place in modern (1961) New York, and instead of rival families separating the two lovers, it was rival gangs? The Jets vs. Obviously a film of this caliber doesn't need me or my praise, but I will share my opinion regardless. ![]() The American Film Institute placed it second on it's list of the greatest film Musicals of all Time, right after "Singin' In the Rain" (and above The Wizard of Oz). In 1962, the film version of the popular musical "West Side Story" won not one, not two, but ten academy awards. Overall, it's fun and good, but it's certainly not perfect. As I said, I think I need to develop this thought more, but I'm still convinced there's something fishy about this film vis a vis race relations. ![]() It is as though the film, in a strain of racism, won't permit its minority characters any reasonable revolt. They feel honored to be here despite the racial realities with which they are faced. Here is a thought that is as yet only a germ in my brain: I find it odd that the white characters' complaints about their environment are social and economic - big world issues - whereas the Latinas embrace the social and economic realities of American life. In and of themselves, the dances are fun and enticing, but there is a true disconnect between them and the story. Set against the rough and tumble backdrop of New York City slums, these dancers are performing balletic and graceful moves the majesty of which belie the film's themes and social and economic realities. What I don't like about the film is the choreography. The film's highlights are the music and songs that give resonance to Shakespeare's classic tale and the wonderfully arresting performance by Natalie Wood. The story is Romeo and Juliet set to music. ![]() Do your best to understand a message from the other's perspective.List and define the four elements of communication. If you want to be a great communicator, begin with the People building block. What assumptions might your conversational partner have about you or the topic? What do you want the other person to think, to feel, to do? Let your answers inform the words, the tone, and the body language you use during the conversation. Think of a conversation you have coming up soon. Those mental filters dictate how we decode or understand a message. ![]() Now that I've thought of how I want her to feel, I might adjust my original wording from, "You do the odd chapters, I'll do the even," to something softer like, "To get the ball rolling, I suggest you edit the odd chapters, I'll do the even, but if you have something else in mind, please let me know right away." Communication gets tricky because all people have mental filters, certain levels of knowledge, personal concerns, or preconceived notions, that affect the way we interpret messages. And what do I want her to do? Get started. What do I want her to feel? Respected, treated fairly. What do I want Tatiana to think? Time to start editing. Who am I to tell her which chapters she has to edit? My intent may have been helpful, but what was the actual impact? When deciding what and how to communicate with another person, consider the Think, Feel, Do model. But the message might sound bossy or overbearing. I intended for this message to Tatiana to be helpful, to get things going. Let's finish by the end of the next week." Simple enough, right? I mean, what could possibly go wrong? Well, if I don't manage perceptions, the whole project and our relationship could blow up. I send her an email saying, "Hey, you edit the odd chapters, I'll do the even ones. For example, Tatiana and I need to edit some writing we've done. Whether you're the sender or the receiver of a message, it's important to think about the other person's perspective. ![]() Let's begin by exploring the People building block. As you walk to your next meeting, think to yourself, "Who will be there? What do I need to know about them? What kind of listener do I want to be right now?" Before you hit Send on your next email, ask yourself, "How's the timing of this email? Is email appropriate, or should I pop in for a quick chat?" You're making communication choices all the time. Before communicating, consider each of these four building blocks. Communication just happens." When I'm coaching a client, I often ask, "What are some recent communication successes you've had?" Frequently the client will say, "I don't know, I don't really think about it. The four elements are at play in every communication event, whether you're presenting in front of 1,000 people or making small talk with a coworker. ![]() I am a bit confused as well about the tristate condition. What do I get? Would that result in the same circuit, functionally? In other words, what is the essential function of the optoisolator? Looking inside the optoisolator as a four-terminal black box, suppose I replace each optoiso with a BJT (collector, emitter on output sides, and base on the input side connecting to the red/green LEDs) and in place of the IR led, placing either a resistor or another LED. So I have a question as I try to understand this circuit. ![]() When I first saw this I said, “but can it make a latch?” And then I watched the video, and voila there it was. Posted in Misc Hacks, Parts Tagged led, logic, logic gate, opto-isolator, optoisolator, optotransistor Post navigation It’s not a ternary computer yet ( although we have seen those), but it is very cool and most probably not stupid. There are about 20 universal logic gates if you can deal with a two. This is huge there are only two universal gates when you’re only dealing with 1s and 0s. In addition to a basic “1” and “0” logic state, these gates can also be configured for a tri-state input and output. It is theoretically possible to build something that could be called a computer with this, but that would do the unique properties of this circuit a disservice. He already has an inverter and a few dozen more optoisolators coming from China. With a few more buttons and LEDs, created something that is either an AND, NAND, OR NOR, depending on your point of view. Connecting the input of the circuit to +5 made the LED connected to ground light up. Connecting the ‘input’ of the circuit to ground made the LED connected to +5V light up. He could then connect the inputs of the isolators to +5V and Gnd because of the voltage drop of four LEDs.Ī few more wheels turned in ’s head, and he decided to connect a switch between the two optoisolators. This idea whirled around his mind for a few months until he got the idea of connecting even more LEDs to the inputs of the optoisolators. Tying the other ends of the phototransistor to +5V and Gnd meant he could switch between VCC and VDD, with every other part of the circuit isolated. was playing around with some optoisolators one day to create a weird push-pull circuit the emitter of one phototransistor was connected to the collector of another. There’s no electrical connection between the two devices, which is exactly what you need in something that’s called an isolator. Inside each optoisolator is a LED and a phototransistor. He has proposed two reasons why this hasn’t been done before: either is exceedingly clever, or optoisolator logic is a very stupid idea. You’ve seen CMOS logic, you’ve seen diode-resistor logic, you’ve seen logic based on relays, and some of you who can actually read have heard about rod logic. ![]() There is no deadline to submit-projects will be reviewed on a rolling basis.įind out more and pitch your idea at /pitch. ![]() Audible doesn’t directly produce Authors’ audiobooks.
